Practical, Skill-Based Support for Parents Navigating Neurodevelopmental Differences

Parent training services at Action Potential Neuropsychological Services are designed to support caregivers in understanding their child’s needs and building effective, evidence-based strategies to promote regulation, connection, and skill development.

Parent training is collaborative and strengths-based, recognizing that parents are experts on their children and that effective support is rooted in understanding, consistency, and realistic expectations.

Who Parent Training Is For

Parent training may be helpful for caregivers of children who:

  • Have ADHD, autism, or other neurodevelopmental differences

  • Experience emotional dysregulation, meltdowns, or difficulty with transitions

  • Struggle with attention, flexibility, or executive functioning

  • Have social communication challenges

  • Are gifted or twice-exceptional and experience intensity or uneven development

  • Need support generalizing skills across home, school, and community settings

Services are appropriate for parents of young children through adolescents.

What Parent Training Focuses On

Depending on family goals and child needs, parent training may focus on:

  • Understanding your child’s neurodevelopmental profile

  • Supporting emotional regulation and co-regulation

  • Building executive functioning skills, such as organization, planning, and flexibility

  • Managing challenging behaviors through proactive, skill-based strategies

  • Improving transitions and daily routines

  • Supporting social communication and peer interactions

  • Strengthening parent–child connection while maintaining clear, supportive boundaries

Training emphasizes skill-building rather than compliance-based approaches.

Evidence-Based Approaches Used

Parent training is informed by evidence-based, developmentally appropriate frameworks, which may include:

  • Behavioral and naturalistic approaches, including principles drawn from Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Parent Management Training (PMT), and Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT)

  • Executive functioning and skills-based coaching models

  • Emotion coaching and regulation-focused strategies

  • Neuroaffirming, relationship-centered approaches

Strategies are adapted to align with each family’s values, goals, and daily realities.

How Parent Training Works

Parent training is typically structured as a series of collaborative sessions that may include:

  • Education about the child’s developmental profile and needs

  • Modeling and practice of specific strategies

  • Troubleshooting real-life challenges as they arise

  • Ongoing adjustment of strategies based on what is and is not working

Services may be offered independently or as a follow-up to an evaluation.

A Supportive, Non-Judgmental Approach

Parent training is not about “fixing” a child or correcting parenting. It is about equipping caregivers with tools, language, and confidence to support their child’s growth while reducing stress and uncertainty.
